About SU

SU 2025-6.jpg

Both writing topline in their bands, Ursa (Let Us Out) and Sarah's (Hexapheen) partnership was born from a mutual admiration coupled with the desire for a more creatively fulfilling project in which they could explore different styles and ideas, unbound by the constraints of an already established multi-player band, all the while learning new skills & gaining experience. Thus, in 2016, SU was born. They have since released three EPs (The Web, Little Sun and A Heart so Dry), a series of four conceptual singles (Existence, Metamorphosis, Discomfort and Transcendence) and one full length album (he(art) is a moment). They also have a double release coming up in February (The Web 2.0//Arachnid). They started with a sound that was closer to trip hop, and started including more and more influences from other genres such as industrial and movie scores as they became more comfortable with their musical identity. Their live performances are usually paired with videos and/or theatrical elements.

More about SU...

What are your musical influences?

Sarah : I have listened to a lot of BSB and Spice Girls as a kid. I also ate up every Disney movie I could and developed from there a fascination with film soundtracks and scores which only grew with time. I started liking grunge and rock music in my teens, and while I did my DEC I made it my mission to explore & discover all the great musicians of each genre… But all this was really just leading me towards the holy grail that was NIN 😂

Ursa : We're both huge Danny Elfman fans. Films and movie scores are always a big source of inspiration. The band who brought me to the darker side of music was Slipknot, and I know that they definitely still influence me, especially for percussions and samples. Other than that, David Bowie, Massive Attack, Sneaker Pimps , Skinny Puppy... Ethereal, ambient, spooky stuff. In the last year I also discovered Ketvector that I love dearly.

What’s your writing process?

Sarah: We send tracks back and forth through the ethers until they are complete! ✨  More specifically, we often have an idea of either the theme or the type of song we want to do, then one of us gets it started, and we take it from there. But sometimes, it’s just an inspired idea out of the blue to create a piece of music or some lyrics, and that can be the spark. When we did our album, that’s the only time (I think) that we had the concept, but we didn’t know how many songs we would do, nor exactly the style, format or the direction it would take, and so for that one we had several song ideas that we ended up discarding.

Ursa : Often, what makes the biggest difference is not adding to an idea, but removing the extra stuff.

What does your Instagram algorithm think you want to see?

Sarah : SO MANY MEMES, cute animals, psychedelic stuff, cocktail recipes, restaurant reviews and apparently a lot of ads, especially for lash stuff 😹

Ursa : Mostly cute animals. All the David Lynch stuff (I am happy to see it). Ads for language learning apps ( I finally caved in and got Babbel, we'll see how it goes). Snacks. At least it stopped showing me people eating whole sticks of butter.
